Fungi

Unlike bacteria and viruses, fungi are made up of more than just one cell. Because of this, some fungi are classed as micro-organisms, others are not.

Fungi are weird in that they can change shape depending on the environment/temperature. Whilst some fungi can cause infection, most play a very important role in decomposition and the recycling of nutrients and minerals in the environment.

We use fungi for lots of different things – including yeast for making bread and beer, and pizza dough! The antibiotics we use today to treat infections were first discovered being made by fungi!
