Cans and jars

Foodborne botulism is a very rare but serious illness caused by bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. This bacterium makes a toxin when it grows in certain foods that are sealed tightly, like cans or jars.

To stay safe, always check if the packaging looks bulged or if the seal is broken before eating. Follow the storage rules on the label, keep food in the fridge when needed, and eat it before the best-before date on the label. When cooking or heating up food, follow the instructions to make sure it's safe to eat.
