Escherichia coli (E. coli)

Normally lives in the intestine of humans and animals, with most strains being harmless, but some causing serious foodborne illness characterised by severe stomach cramps, diarrhoea (often bloody) and vomiting.

It spreads through contaminated food or water, especially undercooked ground beef and unwashed produce. Prevention includes proper food handling, cooking meat thoroughly and practicing good hygiene.
