Infection: Cystic fibrosis. This is a disease that causes a build up of thick mucus. This is the perfect environment for bacteria to grow, and causes severe infection.

Symptoms: Problems with breathing (wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath), weight loss, yellow skin (jaundice), severe infections that eventually lead to lung failure.

Bacteria:

• Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Sued-oh-moan-us air-uh-gin-oh-sah)

• Haemophilus influenzae (Heem-off-ill-us in-flew-en-sea)

• Burkholderia cepacia (Burk-hole-dear-ree-ah sep-a-shh-ee-ah)

• Staphylococcus aureus (Staff-ill-oh-cock-us or-ree-us)
