MSc Student Projects 2024

TEACHERS: Are you interested in hosting us for a Superbugs workshop as part of your science classes?
Please check the options below and get back to us at superbugs@cardiff.ac.uk for more information.
Project 1
Target Audience: Pupils of Key Stage 2
Aim of Workshop: The aim of the workshop is to teach pupils about the basics of microbial world in, on and around us, with a particular focus on infections and antimicrobial resistance. This will be achieved by a number of different activity stations, which will deliver hands on activities, games, microscopes, and even the chance for pupils to swab themselves and grow their own microbes! As the Superbugs team, we are interested evaluating the efficacy of different methods of educating on these topics. This workshop will have a focus on evaluating teaching through gamification.
Structure of Workshop:
Visit 1: 8th-11th OR 15th-19th July, A series of engaging and educational workshops which will involve games, hands–on activities, and the chance for pupils to swab themselves and ‘grow their own microbes’
Visit 2: 8th-11th OR 15th-19th July. We will return with the swab plates so pupils can see what they have grown. We will then run a quiz and competitions aimed at testing what the pupils have learnt, and giving them the chance to win some prizes!
Project 2
Target Audience: Pupils of Key Stage 3
Aim of Workshop: The aim of the workshop is to teach pupils about the basics of microbial world in, on and around us, with a particular focus understanding the spread and emergence of micro-organisms and antimicrobial resistance from the environment through hands on activities and taking part in real-life microbiology research!
Structure of Workshop:
PLEASE NOTE: THE TIMINGS AND DATES OF THESE ARE FLEXIBLE AND ABLE TO BE TAILORED TO SUIT YOU!
Visit 1: Between 1st-5th OR 8th–11th July. We visit your school and deliver an engaging and interactive workshops introducing your pupils to the dynamics of infection control and spread. The pupils will be given the chance to swab themselves and grow their own microbes! They will then be set a homework task- to take home a water sampling kit and collect environmental samples as part of a research project looking for bacteria pathogens and antimicrobial resistance in the environment.
Visit 2: Between 15th–19th July. We will return to collect the water samples, and give the pupils a chance to run some basic experimental analysis on them. We will also bring back the agar plates to see what has grown from the students.
Over the Summer: We will carry out detailed microbiological analysis on the samples
Visit 3: Date to be determined. We revisit the school and present to the pupils the findings from their water samples.
