Norovirus ("winter vomiting bug")
Highly contagious virus causing stomach flu, characterised by vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps and nausea (feeling sick), typically lasting 1-3 days.
It spreads rapidly through contaminated food, water, surfaces and direct contact with infected individuals, often causing outbreaks in places like cruise ships, nursing homes and schools.
Prevention focuses on thorough handwashing, cleaning and disinfecting surfaces, and proper food handling. While there is no specific treatment, managing symptoms with hydration and rest is crucial. Most people recover within a few days, but it can be more severe for vulnerable individuals such as young children and the elderly.
