Spirillum volutans

(Spir-ill-um voll-you-tans)

A spiral-shaped rod (spirillum) and the largest bacterial species — 30-60 times longer than an E. coli bacterium!

Spirillum volutans is an environmental bacterium that lives in fresh water. Its characteristic whip-like tails (called flagella) at each end help it swim through the water hunting for food.
